This is the complete concert of January 27, 1952. It was a terrific concert. Each work receives a magnificent performance. However, the best of them is surely the Symphony No. 1, which receives a great performance, on a par with the performance in Berlin two weeks later. It is a strong, dramatic interpretation throughout. And the orchestra plays wonderfully. Furtwängler was very good with the Haydn Variations and this one is one of the best. The Double Concerto is also very well played. It is interesting to hear how the concert develops, from an expressive performance of the Variations, through to the exciting, ecstatic end of the Symphony.
