Brahms Piano Cto. No. 2 in Bb Major Op. 83
Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C Minor Op. 68 (4th Mov.)

Adrian Aeschbacher, piano
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - 1943 and 1945
$9

Interestingly, there are two performances of the Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto dating from 1942 and 1943. I find that this work is particularly well suited for Furtwängler "grand" vision. This performance is more mercurial than the one with Fischer, which is nobler. Obviously, this is a function of the soloist. Both are worth having since both are excellent soloists. The sound is magnificent on this recording.

The Finale of the 1st Symphony comes from Furtwängler's last concert in Berlin, before going to Vienna (CD 1111) and then to Switzerland. Allied bombing during the performance of Mozart's 40th Symphony before the interval interrupted this concert. I suppose that it is something of a miracle that anything at all survived from this concert. The performance is predictably wild and extremely dramatic. This is a fascinating interpretation under great duress.
