The Finale of the 1st Symphony comes from Furtwängler's last concert in Berlin, before going to Vienna (CD 1111) and then to Switzerland. Allied bombing during the performance of Mozart's 40th Symphony before the interval interrupted this concert. I suppose that it is something of a miracle that anything at all survived from this concert. The performance is predictably wild and extremely dramatic. This is a fascinating interpretation under great duress.
