The Schubert 9th is another one of those Furtwängler performances that is so different from all other interpretations that they all seem weak in comparison. This is a big scale performance: dramatic, heroic and powerful. The last movement, as is often the case with Furtwängler live performances, is wildly ecstatic. This performance, like some other wartime recordings, has a change in equalization during the 2nd movement. Of course, it has been corrected as much as possible.

The Unfinished is a dark and brooding interpretation. I have now incorporated the second movement, although the sound is not good, with much noise. Still, it is better to have it. This is a moving performance, highly expressive.

From Henry Fogel's review of this transfer of the 9th: "I compared Chibás' transfer with those on Pristine, DG, and Tahra. Chibás scores in two areas. One is, once again, dynamic range, which, given the extremes of the performance, is a crucial element. The other is, as he refers to in the interview, his feeling about timpani presence." I have done an updated mastering with better sound.
