Bruckner Symphony No. 5 in Bb Major

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - 1942
$9

I have heard it said that this performance is too fast and driven. Perhaps. However, I know no other performance of this work that expresses better its heroic qualities. As with Brahms, Furtwängler’s Bruckner is a direct descendant of Beethoven. With this composer, there is no doubt in my mind that he is right. This performance is earth shaking and life changing. But this is a characteristic of most Furtwängler performances of Beethoven and Bruckner. The sound is very fine in this recording: one of the best!
