Beethoven Symphony No. 3 in Eb Major Op. 55
Beethoven Leonore Overture No. 2 Op. 72a

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - Dec. 8, 1952 (Sym.) and Oct. 18, 1949 (Ov.)
$9

It is interesting to have two Eroicas from succeeding days: December 7 and 8 of 1952. Both are magnificent, although surprisingly different in tempo and atmosphere. The one from December 7 is faster and more epic, while the one from December 8 is slower and more tragic. Amazing that the same conductor and orchestra could do two such different interpretations so close together. I should point out that, while the tempos vary between them, the tempos change at the same times. In other words, the tempo structure is very similar. Indeed, except in the Funeral March, the tempo structure is also similar to the 1944 Vienna recording. It seems clear that Furtwängler was very clear about this. Still, there are important differences is character. I find this fascinating, which is why I have remastered all three.

The Leonore No. 2 is from 1949. As usual, it is a very dramatic and powerful reading of this underplayed work. Perhaps Furtw?ngler's best interpretation of this Overture.
