Wagner Die Walkure Act I
Bruno Walter

Lotte Lehmann, Lauritz Melchior, Emanuel List
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - 1935
$9

One of the greatest legendary recordings of all time. It has a special place in my heart because it was through this recording in LP form that I was introduced to Wagner's music dramas. Before I just knew his orchestral music. It is hard to imagine a Wagnerian hero better sung than with Melchior, and Lehmann is a vulnerable but strong Sieglinde. The sound is surprisingly good for the time. This is also an example of Walter's conducting at its best. It is naturally flowing with amazing phrasing. Of course, the orchestra plays beautifully.
